We asked Nicholas about his series for the blog.
“I’ve played football for as long as I can remember so I knew I wanted this to be the subject of my final year project at university. When I moved to Birmingham, the first thing I did was get in touch with a local football league and visited many of their matches. I focused on the pitch, the teams and the individual players involved to fully document the experience and atmosphere.
A big inspiration for this project was Hans Van Der Meer and his work focuses on football around Europe. In terms of documenting the details that fully capture the game from start to finish, my biggest inspirations were William Eggleston, Tom Wood and Stephen Shore.
I start my Masters degree in September and I can’t wait to revisit the pitches and photograph the games again. I really want to work more with the people involved and refining my documentation of the experience pre-game and post-game.”
